The importance of ethnic diversity

Ethnic diversity is important for the identity of the community

Diversity is considered a cultural part of Ecuador, the coexistence of two or more cultures in a cordial way, that is, none is superior to another, this is important because it offers resources to the country such as diverse customs and traditions in the same country, thanks to the ethnic groups, being a driving force for development, as an intellectual medium.

Human beings are similar in general characteristics, but the world has differences in beliefs and colors so as not to make it so boring. Those differences, whether visible or not, make us belong to a culture, giving us identity, ethnicity is a set of people who belong to a race and generally to the same community and language.

Our differences define us, they are contributions, it is important to embrace diversity, because we all deserve a safe space, working together.

In 1998 the CONAIE (CONFEDERATION OF INDIGENOUS NATIONALITIES OF ECUADOR) achieved a great advance in the constitution is when Ecuador was declared plurinational, and multi-ethnic ten years later in the 2008 constitution this recognition is achieved, from our perspective this was only a small Step, an anecdote that can be told that a colleague remembers receiving government books is asking who were the children who appeared at the end of the book's back cover, her mother explained that it was the ethnic groups that exist in our country , Afro-descendants, montubios (coastal peasant), and indigenous peoples.

More than 20 years have passed since the well-known Plurinationality and there are still more cultural ignorance gaps in our country. Ethnic diversity goes beyond talking about the subject, it needs to be remarkable and evident, this is achieved in different ways by making groups visible.

In schools, colleges teaches about diversity and ethnic groups in stages of 11 or 12 years old and above, also students of certain ethnic groups such as indigenous peoples are allowed to wear their typical dress, something essential to respect all the individuals who are part of our country.

There are ethnic groups in positions of political power, but even so, our country still has a long history of consideration for other ethnic groups, because as we have just witnessed in the October 2019 protests, our country was represented and defended by indigenous peoples who unfortunately always they had been tainted by the government, exploiting their lands.

In Ecuador there is a passive racism that everyone decides to ignore, because when they decide to ignore doing blackface, ignoring the fact that there are people of African ethnicity in our country who expect opportunities to be represented by themselves, there is a lack of awareness about diversity, and a multinational state, despite the fact that our soccer athletes are mostly Afro-descendants, there is still a lack of representation on our national television, it is clear that there is ethnic diversity, but it is not represented and they continue to disrespect them, as always, hope is in children, they grow up in a better world.

America was conquered in the past, we lost several pre-Columbian customs, let's not let the ethnic groups that live today be discriminated, respect for each person is crucial.

Now I invite you to propose solutions for greater ethnic diversity, also leave comments on our blog
